Generic Trojan.a
I hate it when I don’t update my virus scanner before I go out on a job. I was at an old client of mine (meaning he’s been a client for a long time, not that he’s all advanced in years) today and had to scan his primary machine for some trojans. So, I followed the standard procedure that I usually use. Rebooted to safe mode, used HijackThis to clean up all of the BS entries in the registry that the garbage was using to start up, and then scanned with McAfee’s SuperDAT command line scanner. I usually use the following command: scan /adl /clean /rpterr /report c:\temp\scan.txt if I’m in a hurry then I’ll interchange /adl with c:\windows /sub.
Luckily his little virus problem was really easy to fix. It detected things as generic.trojan.a or generic.trojan.ab or whatever. This generally means that if I get a more updated version it’ll actually label it and usually finds more viruses and the like that it didn’t detect before. I should start using my removable hard drive to continually update it, but that’s a pain as well. Gah, I should burn a new utility CD now. I’m pretty sure that I’m keeping Memorex in business. I burn hundreds of CD-R’s. I’d use a CD-RW, but as many computer techs know, lots of even remotely older drives won’t read em. That’s just about the last thing I need when I’m at a client’s house, not even being able to access my tools.
Oh, and at this same clients house I had to figure out why their new computer wouldn’t POST. Well, after a little inspection I realized that the motherboard was screwed DIRECTLY TO THE CASE! If you plugged in the power supply you would just hear this faint high pitched squeal like your ears were ringing. At this point I’m not sure that the mobo will ever work. But, I’ve seen weirder things happen and still have it work, so I put in the motherboard posts, and screwed the mobo to them. After reinstalling all the hardware the thing booted without a hitch. Lucky them. ASUS makes some resilient boards. I’d figure if you shorted something out that badly that it would FRY the mofo.
Had to dink with the stupid SATA thing with the Windows install. Why don’t they include the floppy anymore? The Windows XP installer doesn’t give the option to load RAID drivers from a CD-ROM. Bah.
